Cochrane SC practises in Sydney and Melbourne. She has a breadth of experience in patent law. She also specialises in commercial cases, with particular experience in competition and consumer law, business restraints of trade, insolvency and corporate governance. Cynthia appears regularly in the Federal Court, Supreme Court NSW and the Patent Office. In September 2025, she led a team of barristers for the patentee, Pfizer, in a pharmaceutical patent trial with two expert concurrent sessions. In September 2024, she led a team of barristers for the revoker in a mining patents trial with three expert concurrent sessions. In 2025, she was lead counsel in two further patent trials, one for the patentee and one for the revoker. Cynthia has a depth of appellate experience, including High Court experience over more than 15 years. In 2023, Cynthia addressed a six-member bench for Aristocrat as to the patentability of computer-implemented inventions. Cynthia was a solicitor at Allens (articled to Prof Bob Baxt AO in competition and corporate governance for one year, then IP litigation for three years) in Melbourne and Sydney and, prior to then, an investment banker in corporate advisory at Macquarie Bank in Melbourne. She also taught economics and finance for many years at the University of Melbourne.
