Professor David Rolph is a Professor of Law at the University of Sydney. He is the author of several books, including Reputation, Celebrity and Defamation Law (Ashgate, 2008), Defamation Law (1st ed., Thomson Reuters, 2016)), Landmark Cases in Defamation Law (Hart Publishing, 2019), Balkin and Davis Law of Torts (6th ed., LexisNexis, with J. Varuhas, P. Crossley and M. Douglas) and the forthcoming Contempt (Federation Press, 2022), as well as numerous book chapters and journal articles. Professor Rolph is also one of the authors of the 13th edition of Gatley on Libel and Slander (Sweet & Maxwell, 2022). His research has been cited by the High Court of Australia, the New Zealand Court of Appeal, the Federal Court of Australia, the New South Wales Court of Appeal and the Supreme Courts of Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and Victoria. Professor Rolph is currently a member of the Defamation Expert Panel advising the New South Wales Department of Communities and Justice on reforms to the Model Defamation Provisions. He has previously served on advisory committees for the Australian Law Reform Commission on privacy, the Victorian Law Reform Commission on contempt of court and the Australian Human Rights Commission on the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (Cth) s 18C. From 2007 to 2013, Professor Rolph was the editor of the Sydney Law Review, one of Australia's leading generalist law journals. Since 2015, he has been one of the editors of the New South Wales Law Reports. Since 2018, he has been a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Law.
